Spring and Summer 2008

 

  • Hugo, Adnan, Debo, Lian-Wee, Bernardo join the group as PhD Students. Gustavo and Jaime join as a post doctoral fellows. Martin, Justin, Brielle join us for the summer as undergraduate researchers. Welcome everyone!
  • Brad successfully defended his dissertation. Congratulations! Brad joins McKinsey in Toronto.
  • Art received the IGERT fellowship from NSF.
  • Amy's collaborative work with Prof. Gaeta's group appears in Nature Photonics. Mark and Amy's review paper on nonlinear optics in nanowires appears in Optics Express.
  • Long passed his A exam. Kyle, Nick, Jake and Hugo cleared the qualifiers. Congratulations!
  • Po finished his postdoctoral fellowship in early Spring. Po joins Kotura, Inc.
  • Amy's work on wavelength conversion appeared in Optics Express.
  • Amy and Mark got married on April 12th! Congratulations!
  • Kyle's work on polysilicon optical modulator published in Applied Physics Letters.
  • Jacob's papers on gas sensors and far field control of optical nanocavities appear in Optics Express and PRL.
  • Long's work on tunable bandwidth cavities highlighted in Nature Photonics.
  • Jacob, Amy, Sasha, Long, Sasi, Kyle, Art, Nick and Brad's papers were presented at CLEO.
  • Brad's work with Prof. Erickson group and Amy's work with Prof. Bergman group were presented in the post deadline sessions at CLEO.
  • Sasi and Jacob gave talks at IPNR on wide temperature modulators, geographically distributed optical networks.
  • Sasi give a talk at the Slow and Fast light (SL) Conference on superluminal propagation in silicon.
  • Jacob Robinson successfully defended his dissertation in July. Congratulations!
  • Sasi's paper on electrooptic quality factor tuning to appear in Optics Letters.

 

Fall 2007

 

  • Michal was elected Fellow of the Optical Society of America! Congratulations!
  • Carl was promoted to Research Associate in ECE. Congratulations!
  • Brad's work on optical trapping (with Professor Erickson's Group) highlighted in New Scientist, Science Daily.
  • Amy passed her A exam. Sasi passed qualifying exam. Congratulations!
  • Our work in slow-light discussed in Optical and Photonics News November Edition!
  • Amy and Mark's work on continuous wave wave-length conversion in SOI waveguides published in Optics Express.
  • Sasi and Qianfan's paper on PINIP ultra-fast modulator published in Optics Express.
  • Po's work on broadband switch published in Optics Express.

Summer 2007

 

  • Michal got promoted as Associate Professor of ECE! Congratulations!
  • Qianfan's paper on storing light was publsihed in Nature Physics.
  • Qianfan and Po's work on slow light featured in MIT Technology Review. (http://www.technologyreview.com/Nanotech/18949/)
  • Qianfan and Po's work on slow light appeared in the print version of Nature Physics. (www.nature.com/nphys/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nphys600.html)
  • Michal is visiting University of Campinas (Unicamp) in Brazil. Jacob, Nick join Michal at Unicamp. Michal is teaching Nanophotonics at Unicamp this summer.
  • We received funding from DARPA for Silicon Photonics beyond 100 GHz in collaboration with Prof. Axel Scherer and Prof. Oscar Painter at Caltech.
  • Our collaborative team on Photofluidics with with Prof. David Erickson (MAE, Cornell) and Prof. Todd Krauss from Univ of Rochester received the Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Team (NIRT) funding.
  • Adam, Kylan, Peter and Scott join us for summer research. Welcome!
  • Jacob R. passed his A exam. Congratulations!
  • Carl gave an invited talk at Photonics North '07.
  • Amy and Brad's paper on 2R regeneration on silicon chip, in collaboration with Prof. Gaeta, appeared in Optics Express.
  • We received funding from Intel for our research on polysilicon electrooptic modulators.

Spring 2007

 

  • Qianfan and Po's paper on breaking the bandwidth delay limit appeared in the advanced online publications of Nature Physics.
  • Michal's interview appeared in the May edition of Nature Photonics. The coverpage was designed by Nick and Sasha.
  • Qianfan, Jacob, Sasi, Kyle, Po and Long gave talks at the CLEO 2007 conference.
  • Jacob and Amy gave post-deadline talks at the CLEO 2007 conference.
  • Qianfan successfully defended his dissertation. Congratulations!

 

 

Winter 2007

 

  • Qianfan's paper on all optical logic based on silicon resonators was published.
  • Jacob Levy joins the group. Welcome Jacob!
  • Amy's visible ring resonators appear on the cover of the Center for Electronic Imaging Systems Annual Report (2005-2006).
  • Amy's and Brad's broadband amplifier is discussed in Photonics Spectra (Sept. 2006), is referenced in an article by B. Jalali on silicon photonics in Scientific American (Feb. 2007), is discussed in the Cornell Chronicle (July 2006), and is discussed in Optics and Photonics News (Nov. 2006).
  • Amy's and Brad's collaborative paper entitled "Generation of correlated photons in nanoscale silicon waveguides" appeared in Opt. Express (Dec. 2006).
  • Jacob, Brad, Long and Qianfan presented contributed talks at the LEOS conference in Montreal.
  • Jacob's and Long's work on nanoscale light confinement is discussed in Laser Focus World.
  • Michal is chairing the Nanophotonics committee at the CLEO 2007 conference .
  • Michal received the IBM Faculty Award.
  • Qianfan's, Sasikanth's, Brad's and Jagat's paper on 12.5 Gbit/s silicon modulator appeared in Optics Express.
  • Michal's review article on all optical switching in Nature Photonics is published.
  • Michal's invited paper on OEM in the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics was published.

 

 

Fall 2006

 

  • Michal is giving invited talks at the LEOS annual meeting, MIT, Georgia Tech, MRS Fall conference, Princeton, and the Photonics 2006 conference in India.
  • New funding from Sharp received
  • Slow Light funding received from DARPA
  • Michal gives invited talks at the Group IV Photonics, Ottawa and at the DTU, Copenhagen
  • Qianfan's paper on WDM is published in Optics Express
  • Jacob's paper on the TraNSOM (high resolution imaging technique) is published in Optics Exress

 

Summer 2006

 

  • Linnell graduated in early June!
  • Carl graduated in early July
  • Art joined our group as a PhD student
  • Nick joined our group as a PhD student
  • The summer REU students, Miguel Alamillo and Albert Kamanzi, were very successful with their summer projects. Miguel worked on tapering optical fibers for sensitive device characterization, and Albert worked on characterizing and improving the contact resistance of our EO switch.
  • 12.5 GPs operation of our EO switch was successfully demonstrated
  • New funding from Kodak has been approved
  • Qianfan gives a talk on Slow Light in Washington
  • Brad is giving a talk at the Group IV conference
  • A joint collaboration with IBM and UC Santa Barbara is undertaken for intra chip communication (funded by DARPA)

 

 

Spring 2006

 

  • Michal gave two invited talks at European MRS, one invited talk at the Workshop for Interconnect in Sante Fe, NM, and one invited talk at CLEO in Long Beach, CA.
  • Qianfan's and Brad's work together with Shanhui Fan was discussed in Nature's News and Views of the week of May 29 2006.
  • Amy's paper in Optics Express was published.
  • Long's paper in Optics Letters was published.
  • Long, Qianfan, Amy and Linnell gave talks at the CLEO conference.
  • Our modulators were successfully fabricated for the first time in a true CMOS line by BAE systems.

 

Winter 2006

 

  • Qianfan's work on Bistability is featured on the May 2006 Photonics Spectra issue.
  • Qianfan passes his A exam. Congratulations!
  • Sasikanth, Kyle and Art join the group as PhD students.
  • Po Joins the group as a PostDoc.
  • Qianfan's paper at IR was upgraded to invited.
  • At the CLEO conference, Amy, Linnell and Qianfan will be giving talks.
  • We have received a new grant from Analog, to develop couplers on chip.
  • We have received a new grant from DARPA to develop ultra high speed modulators.
  • Carl's paper on photoluminescence and cathodolumiescence of Eu doped GaN powder was published in Applied Physics Letters (click here to view).
  • Qianfan's paper on optical bistability was published in Optics Letters.
  • A joint project with Kimerling, Fauchet, Brongersma, Dal Negro, Prather, Koch and Michel was selected as a winner of the MURI competition for developing the next silicon laser.

Summer 2005

  • Stephen Emelett joined our group as an M. Eng. student. Welcome Stephen! Stephen will be working on electro-optic modulators.
  • Kyle Preston joined our group as an undergraduate student. Welcome Kyle! Kyle will be working on novel fabrication methods on waveguides.
  • Michal is giving invited talks in the Group IV Photonics in Brussels, and at the ECOC in Glasgow. In October, Michal will also be giving invited talks at the OSA Annual meeting and at the LEOS annual meeting.
  • Our research on the Electro-Optic Modulator is discussed in MIT's Technology Review Magazine and in the Photonics Spectra Magazine (click here).

 

Spring 2005

  • Paper co-authored by Qianfan Xu, Brad Schmidt andMichal Lipson on a Silicon electro-optical switch is published in Nature
